The resources below are for California employers. If you’re outside of California, you’re gonna have to look up your local employment laws the old-fashioned way. Resources are abundant out there. I like Gusto for all things employment. You plug in the info and all of the compliance and tax stuff is filed and paid on time every time. Worth the price in my opinion because it is comprehensive enough to be able to adapt to the natural expansion and contraction cycles in a business.

 

California Employers

You have to register as an employer in California. First, you need to create an EDD E-Services for Business account. Start by clicking the button below and selecting “Enroll for a username and password to access Employer Services Online”. Then, when you’re in your account, click “Register New” and select Register A New Account (DE1).

When you hire a new employee you need to get these filled out and filed somewhere secure.

Independent Contractors.

Have independent contractors? The rules for 1099 employees are pretty strict in California. If you’re sure your contractors qualify get this form signed, so filing your 1099s will be a breeze every January.
